LANDI factory
Pellegrino Landi started a workshop in Lucca, with his sons Lando, Carlo, Valentino and Silvano, for the creation of plaster statues and ornaments. In 1932 Lando, Pellegrino’s eldest son, opened a wood sculptor’s studio specializing in the creation of sacred statues which were later also produced in plaster. Since 1974 the business has continued under the management of Giuliano Landi, Lando’s great-grandson, who joined the company in 1969.
Pinocchio story
The Adventures of Pinocchio. Story of a puppet is a fantasy novel for children written by Carlo Collodi, pseudonym of the journalist and writer Carlo Lorenzini, published for the first time in Florence in February 1883. Geppetto, a very poor carpenter whose desire was to have a child, thought of making a puppet to make up for this family shortage. But he was so poor that he didn’t even have a log of wood to work on, so he had one given to him by master Ciliegia, another carpenter in the village. The log of wood turned out to be “magical”, it spoke and moved, and by the end of the puppet’s creation, Pinocchio had a life of its own. But the misadventures, the vicissitudes, and the troubles he gets into are so many that only thanks to the intervention of the blue-haired Fairy, Pinocchio escapes the dangers, thus managing to mature morally and become a real child.
The first half of the book originally appeared in installments between 1881 and 1882 under the title The Story of a Puppet, but its success prompted the author to rework and extend the material for volume publication. Collodi’s novel is considered a literary masterpiece and its narrative value was immediately recognized going well beyond children’s literature thanks to its narrative depth which lends itself to a plurality of interpretations, the main of which sees the passage from marionette (not puppet, as the title suggests) to a real child as a metaphor of the human condition: Benedetto Croce highlights that “the wood from which Pinocchio is cut is humanity” and considered the book one of the great works of Italian literature
